Bus fares across north east Lincolnshire are being capped at £1 on weekends and after 18:00 on weekdays.

North East Lincolnshire Council said it hoped the move would boost passenger numbers over Christmas.

Bosses said the initiative, which is being funded by the Department for Transport, would run for "a limited time only" and is subject to uptake as well as further investment.

Fares at other times will continue to be capped at £2.

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for transport, said: "By offering cheap bus travel, we can help business growth and regeneration in the borough by encouraging people to come out and shop locally.

"The Christmas period is a great time to help small businesses thrive and shows support to the local community as well."

Lani Lamming, from Equans, the organisation managing the scheme, added: "It's a time where people are spending money on presents and food for over the holidays, therefore we want to help reduce the costs of what people spend on travel."

The government has recently announced single bus fares would continue to be capped at £2 until the end of 2024.
