Cameron Walsh: Tributes to young Grimsby footballer and dad killed in crash

Friends of a teenage footballer killed in a car crash alongside his father have laid tributes at the scene.

Cameron Walsh, 16, and his father, Dave Walsh, 40, died on 6 January when the car they were travelling in went into a Lincolnshire waterway near Tetney Lock.

Cameron, who played for Grimsby Town's academy side, and Mr Walsh were described by the League Two side as "part of the family".

A friend of the teenager, Julian Otu, said everybody was "distraught".

"He was one of our best mates," he said.

"We went to school with him and used to play football with him and it was just a shock, I didn't believe it."

Meanwhile, Chase McCartney said Mr Walsh "saw us all as his own kids".

"He was one of those people, very welcoming, his whole family was very welcoming to us all," he said.

Fin Goodfellow described the moment he learned of their deaths as "the worst day of my life".

Grimsby Town Chief Executive Debbie Cook said "Everybody at Grimsby Town is devastated by the loss of Cameron and Dave.

"Cameron was an integral, much loved part of our academy, and Cameron and Dave were very much part of the Grimsby Town family."

Tributes have also been paid from across the footballing world.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter) the official FA Cup account issued a statement, external, saying: "We're saddened to learn of the passing of Grimsby Town youth player, Cameron Walsh.

"Cameron was a bright young player who has been a vital part of Grimsby Town's FA Youth Cup campaign this season.

"Our thoughts go out to his family during this tragic time."

Several clubs, including Liverpool and Leeds United, have also posted tributes alongside Cameron's former club Cleethorpes Town, where the father and son had both been players.

"Dave was a popular footballer in the area, having played for the Owls at the beginning of our journey and then taking on the management of his son Cameron's side having many, many happy times," the club said.

An online fundraiser for the family has raised almost £25,000.

The car had been travelling along Tetney Lock Road, when it left the carriageway and became submerged in a waterway running alongside the road.

Lincolnshire Police said the pair were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers have appealed for witnesses and dashcam footage of the incident, which happened at about 13:30 GMT.
