A landmark bridge in Grimsby will be closed to pedestrians each Wednesday during February, the council has said.

Since February 2023, Corporation Road Bridge has been closed to traffic as the grade II-listed structure undergoes a £5m restoration.

As well as the road closure, the footpath will be closed from 09:00 to 16:00 GMT on 7, 14, 21 and 28 February.

North East Lincolnshire Council said shutting the bridge to pedestrians was necessary for safety reasons.

The council said weekend working was also now required, with work earmarked for 3, 4 and 17, 18 February. However, the authority said the footpath would remain open on those dates.

The bridge, which opened in 1925, spans the River Freshney and is a main route into Grimsby town centre, connecting Corporation Road to Victoria Street South.

Its refurbishment is being undertaken by Spencer Group, which has worked on some of the UK's biggest bridge projects, including the Humber Bridge and £10m repair work to the Forth Road Bridge in Scotland.

Work was expected to be finished in December 2023.

However, grit-blasting work on the structure uncovered "significant areas of rusting and corrosion".
