Southall street celebrates new royal connection

Clarence Street in Southall, west London, hosts a street party

A street party has been held in Clarence Street in Southall, west London, to celebrate its connections with Kate Middleton, who is now the Duchess of Cambridge.

Her grandfather Ron Goldsmith lived at number 57 with his five siblings and parents, Charlie and Edith, in the 1930s.

More than 6,000m of bunting were hung between the 140 houses, which are in the heart of one of London's biggest Asian communities.

Savoury Asian food and sweet treats were served up to party-goers without charge by local restaurants.

Retired electrician Tilson Ambo, 84, has lived on Clarence Street since 1956 and remembers the duchess's grandparents Ron and Dorothy Goldsmith as "very nice people".

Southall local Austin Hodge said he was so excited about the wedding that he "could not go to sleep until one in the morning".

Carole Middleton, the bride's mother, went to school at nearby Featherstone High School.

Labour MP for Ealing Southall Virendra Sharma (right), who helped to organise the celebration, said the community had been working together to "show the whole country that this is a multi-cultural, multi-racial country".

Young and old sat and stood side by side to watch the wedding on a giant screen.

Three scenes recreating a traditional Asian wedding were also enacted as part of the celebrations.
