London mayor criticised for 'breaking Jubilee Tube promises'

Parts of the Jubilee Line will be closed over three weekends this autumn

London Mayor Boris Johnson has come under fire after it emerged that there would be further weekend Jubilee Line closures in the autumn.

London Assembly member Val Shawcross called for an explanation after Transport for London revealed passengers would be hit with four more closures in September and October.

The mayor's office said it was because of work on the Metropolitan Line.

The closures will affect stations between Stanmore and West Hampstead.

Ms Shawcross, Labour's transport spokesperson, said: "On at least five separate occasions this year Boris Johnson has promised an end to weekend tube closures on the Jubilee Line and each time he has broken his promise.

"Boris Johnson is responsible for the Tube. Enough is enough, it's time for him to get a grip.

"His failure to end the weekend closures is causing huge disruption to millions of Tube users and lost income to many small businesses."

A spokeswoman for the mayor said: "The Jubilee Line upgrade work is now complete."

She added that the mayor had been advised by TfL that the autumn closures were part of upgrade work on the adjoining Metropolitan Line, which requires four partial weekends closures.

"We appreciate that this does mean further frustrations when some interconnecting lines need maintenance and upgrade work."
