London Marathon 2014: In pictures

Mo Farah made his competitive debut in the London Marathon and finished in eighth place.

He had hoped to beat the British record of two hours, seven minutes and 13 seconds, but missed out by about one minute.

Wilson Kipsang of Kenya, who won in 2012, took victory in the men's elite race in a new course record of 2:04:29

Many competitors thanked the supporters for cheering them along the 26.2-mile route.

Spot the famous faces. Footballer Michael Owen, TV presenter Jenni Falconer and news reader Sophie Raworth were among the celebrity runners lined up at the start of the race.

They joined more than 36,000 other runners who tackled the course which included running over Tower Bridge

Some made the challenge even harder for themselves, like this group who were hoping to break the world record for the fastest marathon run by a brass band.

The streets of London became a sea of colour as all sorts of characters took part in the event

Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls was one of nine MPs to tackle the course.

After crossing the finish line every runner was rewarded with one of these well-earned medals
