A man has been charged with the murder of a 16-year-old boy who was stabbed in south London.

Damarie Omare Roye died in hospital on Sunday, two days after being taken there by passers-by who found him on Bensham Manor Road, Croydon.

Byron Whyne, 19, of Grenaby Road, Croydon, will appear at Bromley Magistrates' Court later.

A post-mortem examination found the cause of death was a stab wound, the Met Police said.

Moped appeal

Det Ch Insp Kate Blackburn, who is leading the investigation, said: "Damarie was a young man who was popular among those that knew him. His death has caused unimaginable devastation to his family and friends.

"We believe that Damarie may have been riding a blue mountain bike before the attack. Anyone who may have seen him in the area - with or without the bike - or who witnessed the attack, is urged to get in touch with the police."

She also asked people to look out for a dark moped "concealed, abandoned, parked or even being ridden around" in the Thornton Heath area before or after the murder.

Another man, 22, who was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A drugs was later further arrested on suspicion of murdering Damarie. He has since been released under investigation.

To date, 22 teenagers have been killed in London in 2021. Across the whole of last year, 17 teens were killed in violent attacks in the capital.

If teenage deaths continue at the current rate, this will be the worst year for teenage killings in London since 2008.
