A 14-year-old boy has appeared in court charged with murdering a married father of three who was stabbed to death outside his home in north-east London.

James Markham, 45, died on Monday night after confronting a group of youths shouting and swearing outside his home in Churchill Terrace, Chingford.

The teenager appeared at Stratford Youth Court on Friday charged with possessing a knife in public.

The boy is in youth detention and will appear at the Old Bailey on 17 August.

The teenager, who cannot be named due to his age, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

He is further charged with breaching a criminal behaviour order (CBO).

Mr Markham has been described by friends as a "man with a good heart and a good soul".

Another 14-year-old boy and a girl, 16, have been released under investigation.

A second boy, also 14, had been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder and a 16-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
