A student from London who is studying at the university where 14 people were shot dead on Thursday has spoken of his shock and relief after a chance decision led him away from the gunman.

Alfie Price, 20, from Kingston upon Thames, sat an exam in the morning before heading to lunch.

He said: "We heard a bunch of sirens and got a bunch of missed calls."

Mr Price added that he would have been "right in the middle" of the scene had he taken a different route.

"I got a phone call from my sister who was crying because she didn't know if I was involved," he added.

Mr Price has been spending a semester at Charles University in Prague as part of his studies.

He also said that students are "in shock" that such an event has happened in the "safe" city of Prague.

"At first we underestimated the gravity of the situation. Where we were there was an eerie silence around us and then it began to sink in.

"The university administration has emailed us and sent condolences and cancelled classes.

"Considering Prague is such a safe city it has come as a particular shock.

"All throughout the semester we have been told things like this just don't happen in Prague."
