The crash happened after a Range Rover failed to stop for police

A motorcyclist has been killed in a crash following a police chase in south-west London.

A Range Rover crashed into the rider on the A3 near Putney Common in the early hours of Monday.

The driver of the Range Rover had failed to stop for police and a pursuit began at about 00:30 GMT, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said.

Police said the driver of the 4x4 was arrested and remained in custody.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for police, causing death by dangerous driving, theft of motor vehicle and driving under the influence of drugs, the Metropolitan Police said.

The Range Rover overturned during the crash. The motorcyclist was declared dead at the scene; the driver of the Range Rover was not seriously hurt.

The Met said it was working to establish the identity of the motorcyclist.

The IOPC has launched an investigation into the Met Police's involvement.

Its investigators were notified of the crash shortly afterwards and attended the scene to begin gathering information.

A spokesperson for the IOPC said: "Our thoughts are with the family of the rider who died and all those who have been affected by this incident."

The Met Police appealed for witnesses to come forward, and said it would "fully support" the IOPC investigation.
