South Carriage Drive could be closed permanently to motor traffic

A road on the south side of London's Hyde Park could be closed to motor vehicles permanently to curb the number driving through.

The Royal Parks has opened a six-week consultation for views on shutting South Carriage Drive.

It has been temporarily shut to motor traffic on weekdays since 2020 due to a new cycle lane, and permanently shut on weekends.

The consultation will run from 5 February to 17 March.

Darren Share, director of parks at the Royal Parks, the charity which manages some of London's green spaces, said he felt "it was only right to ask the community for their views", the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

"Following consultation on Saturday closures, we received significant feedback from consultees to request a permanent closure across all days of the week," he added.

"Considering this, and the significant increase in cycle traffic now using the park, we felt it was only right to ask the community for their views."

The Royal Parks wrote on its consultation webpage that the move was intended "to address safety concerns between cars and cyclists", and had been in place more than three years.

The consultation is available online, external and there will also be face-to-face surveys in the area.
