Wandsworth named London Borough of Culture from April 2025

The next London Borough of Culture as been named as Wandsworth.

The south London borough will hold the title from April 2025 and was declared the winner at an event on Monday.

Simon Hogg, leader of Wandsworth Council, said: "We're going to deliver a year to remember.

"A massive thank you to the hundreds of community organisations, creative venues, schools, businesses and residents of all ages who helped shape our bid."

Haringey was also announced as a winner, and will hold the title from 2027. The two winning boroughs will each receive £1.35m from City Hall.

Croydon was the previous London Borough of Culture and held a year of music and arts events from April 2023.

Wandsworth and Haringey were among several boroughs vying for the role, including Barnet, Ealing, Greenwich, Hammersmith and Fulham, Havering, Merton and Newham.

'Cornerstone' in calendar

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: "This prestigious award has become a cornerstone in the capital's calendar, using the power of culture to unite communities, transform young people's lives and boost the local economy.

"Cultural programmes like the London Borough of Culture form a crucial part of our work to provide positive opportunities for young people."

Mr Hogg added: "As a result of the mayor's funding we're going to deliver a year to remember - using the power of culture to transform lives, connect people and improve wellbeing, never more important than now."

Koko Idiong, 17, who presented Wandsworth's bid to the Greater London Authority said the borough had a "diverse arts and culture scene".

Wandsworth is home to Battersea Arts Centre, the Royal College of Art, National Opera Studio and the Royal Academy of Dance.

It has a range of grassroots arts organisations and other attractions including Battersea Park, Tooting Market, Battersea Power Station and the Clapham Grand.

Peray Ahmet, leader of Haringey Council, said of the borough's 2027 win: "We're absolutely delighted, lots of effort went into this."

She said the year would focus on Haringey as "the rebel borough" and celebrate its "radical history".
