A hospital maintenance worker who attacked colleagues with a pickaxe and a scalpel has been jailed for 30 years.

Matteo Bottarelli, 44, was convicted of two counts of attempted murder and one of grievous bodily harm with intent after he hacked at two co-workers with a mattock in June 2023.

He said "today is your lucky day" to one victim at Central Middlesex Hospital and knifed him in the neck.

The other victim was left with a lifelong brain injury, the court heard.

Bottarelli previously admitted affray and having an offensive weapon.

Speaking after conviction, Met officer Det Con Jacob Eyres, said: "Bottarelli posed a clear threat to his colleagues and to public safety.

"This was an unprovoked attack on people working to help others and it is right that Bottarelli will now face the consequences of his actions."

Sentencing took place at Wood Green Crown Court.
