The southbound tunnel is closed this weekend

Part of the Blackwall Tunnel has been closed for the weekend as work continues on the Silvertown Tunnel.

Traffic was stopped from using the southbound route at 00:01 BST and it will remain closed until 05:00 on Monday.

The 57-year-old crossing is also due to shut on 1-3 June, 8-10 June and 29 June-1 July, as resurfacing and landscaping work is undertaken.

The northbound route will remain open, Transport for London (TfL) has said.

The Silvertown Tunnel is due to open in 2025, after which drivers using both tunnels will pay to cross the Thames.

The Woolwich Ferry, Rotherhithe Tunnel and Tower Bridge are all expected to be busier as a result of the closure.

The 108 bus, the only route that operates through the Blackwall Tunnel, is instead running between Lewisham and North Greenwich, and from Canning Town to Stratford.

Passengers who complete their journeys using the Jubilee line will automatically be refunded.

The Blackwall Tunnel has already seen a series of weekend closures this year.

Nick Fairholme, TfL's director of capital delivery, said: "We are doing everything in our power to limit potential disruption and complete these essential works as quickly as possible, including ensuring a northbound route through the Blackwall Tunnel is maintained throughout."
