Engineers at Manchester checked the plane over and found no faults

A plane carrying 231 passengers had to be diverted to Manchester after the pilots reported smelling smoke in the cockpit.

The Delta Airlines flight from New York to Athens was forced to land at 0427 BST.

Passengers and crew exited the Boeing 767 normally and the plane was checked by engineers and passed as fit to fly.

A strike by air traffic controllers in France means passengers will not be able to fly onwards until Friday.
