Student arrests in Manchester during protest marches

Five people were arrested as 1,000 students marched through the centre of Manchester in protest over a planned rise in university tuition fees.

Two were detained on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and the others were arrested for public order offences during the march and demonstration in Cathedral Gardens.

Students from the city's universities and from Salford University took part.

There was a heavy police presence to help ensure a peaceful protest.

The demonstration follows national protests last week when thousands of students and school pupils walked out of lectures and classes.

The protest is one of several taking place across the UK.

Campaigners are opposing rising tuition fees, which could triple to £9,000 under government proposals, which many students say they cannot afford.
