Motorists could have to pay for parking seven days a week

Manchester's motorists could have to pay for on-street parking for 12 hours a day, seven days a week, the city council has said.

A consultation process on the plan has been set up by the city council which could see restrictions from 0700 to 1900 or 0800 to 2000.

The potential change emerged when the council announced its financial savings package in February.

Currently, parking restrictions are in place 0800 to 1800 Monday to Saturday.

Residents and businesses are being asked whether they prefer 0700 to 1900 or 0800 to 2000 for seven days a week.

The council said the consultation follows a review of the current parking system, examining trends such as an increased number of people visiting the city centre on Sundays and the extended rush hour on weekdays.

Councillor Nigel Murphy, city council executive member for the environment, said: "Motorists often park in one spot for long periods on Sundays, meaning there are no bays available for short-term visitors and city centre roads become congested as people drive around looking for somewhere to park.

"If approved, these plans will make it easier for shoppers and visitors to find spaces nearer to their destinations, as well as reducing city centre congestion and making parking easier for disabled badge holders."
