Teenage judo star faces jail over Manchester looting

A teenage member of the Great Britain judo team could face jail after admitting burglary and handling stolen goods during last week's riots.

Anthony Lloyd, 17, was found with his pockets "bulging" with stolen jewellery and cigarettes on 9 August, Manchester Magistrates' Court heard earlier.

Lloyd, from Audenshaw, pleaded guilty to burglary of a non-dwelling property and handling stolen goods.

He was remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced on 6 September.

Lloyd, who was stopped by police at 21:30 BST at the height of the Manchester riots, admitted taking £66 worth of cigarettes from a newsagent that had already been attacked.

'A tragedy'

His solicitor said he found the jewellery on the ground where it was left after being looted by others, and intended to give it to his girlfriend.

Lloyd was supported in court by his father, a social worker, and his mother, a nurse.

The court heard that the 17-year-old, part of the British Judo team, had been training that night.

Estelle Parkhouse, defending, said: "Here we have a man who is from a good family and has never been before the courts before.

"He had finished training that night and ventured into the city centre out of curiosity."

Remanding him in custody, Judge Taafe told Lloyd: "It is a tragedy because you are a bright boy with a bright future ahead of you.

"The court will have at the forefront of its mind a deterrent sentence and that includes the possibility of custody."
