Manchester and Salford riots: Suspect held after TV appeal

A man has been arrested over rioting in Manchester and Salford, following an appeal on BBC's Crimewatch.

Greater Manchester Police said it was also following up several leads after the programme.

New CCTV footage of the looting and disorder at Manchester Arndale and Salford shopping city was shown.

There was also footage of raids on Cathedral Jewellers and Alfred E Mutter in Thomas Street, where thousands of pounds worth of jewellery was stolen.

Police have also released footage of the attack on the Bang and Olufsen store in Manchester.

Det Ch Insp Bob Tonge, from GMP's Major Investigation Team, said: "Since the start of the investigations, we have had a good response from members of the public and information following last night's Crimewatch appeal has led to an arrest.

"The investigation is continuing and I would urge the community to continue to look at images featured in the local press, our Flickr website and GMP's website.

"If you recognise anyone from these images, please contact us as soon as possible.

"If you recognise yourself, I would urge you to hand yourself in as it is only a matter of time before we catch up with you."

GMP said it had arrested more than 280 people over the riots. They have been questioned on offences including burglary, theft, possessing an offensive weapon.

Of those arrested, more than 180 have been charged and dozens have been through the courts, with many jailed.
