Further 400 job losses at Salford City Council

A further 400 jobs are expected to go and £24m cut from next year's budget when Salford City Council unveils its budget plans on Tuesday.

Six hundred jobs have already gone at the authority and £40m of savings have been made in the past year.

Finance spokesman Bill Hinds said cuts will be felt across the board but the Labour-run authority is doing all it can to protect people.

He said: "Nobody can cut that amount of money without dire consequences."

Joe Murphy, who is responsible for the council's workforce, said: "We have tried our best to avoid compulsory redundancy.

"The people employed by the town hall have had their wages frozen and are facing extra costs and uncertainty.

"But they have pulled together and worked their socks off to make sure front line services continue and we find new ways of cutting costs to deliver the same standard."

The full details of next year's budget will be confirmed at Tuesday's meeting.
