Ex-Manchester City stars honour killed PCs

Former stars of Manchester City are rallying to help the families of two police officers killed on duty.

A City XI, featuring ex England winger Peter Barnes and Scotland midfielder Asa Hartford, will play Greater Manchester Police on 25 November.

The match at Hyde United's ground will honour PCs Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes who died in Mottram in September.

A man charged with their murders is due before Preston Crown Court next year.

The initiative came from the ex-players organisation.

Derek Partridge, of Manchester City Former Players FC, said: "After the tragic incident we felt it would be a good idea to do something for the families of the girls that the local police officers could get involved in, as we recognise the tremendous job that the local police do in the community."

Insp Terry Finn, from the Hyde Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "It has the potential to be a superb event and I am sure that Tameside Police officers will do their best - but I do predict a one sided affair."

Peter Barnes is set to line up against GMP

Officers from the Tameside Division, including Ch Supt Nick Adderley in goal and a female officer, will form the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) team.

Other former City players expected to play are Andy Dibble, Richard Edghill and Uwe Rosler.

Proceeds from the £5 entry for adults will go to the charity.

PCs Bone and Hughes were killed in a grenade and gun attack while investigating a suspected burglary.
