FC United members choose new Moston stadium's name

The £5.5m stadium is partly funded by a community share issue and individual donations from members and supporters

Fans have chosen the name for a new £5.5m football stadium due to open in Manchester in September.

FC United, which is owned and run by its members, is building the new ground and community facility in Moston.

More than half the members chose Broadhurst Park from a shortlist of seven names.

The club was formed in 2005 by Manchester United fans as a protest against American businessman Malcolm Glazer's takeover.

Community share issue

General manager Andy Walsh said: "Naming the ground is something that is important, not just to our football club and our local partners Moston Juniors, but also to the people in the surrounding community who will use the facilities."

The club, which plays in the Evostik Premier Division at level 7, said it is "proud" to have "bucked the trend" of clubs selling naming rights to their stadiums.

The £5.5m stadium is being part funded by FC United members and supporters via a community share issue and individual donations.

Grant funding came from the Football Foundation, Sport England, Manchester City Council and the government's Community Assets and Services Fund.

The club currently play their home matches at Gigg Lane, ground-sharing with Bury FC.

They have now launched a "crowdfunder" appeal, asking the public to help kit out the new ground.
