A sinkhole has opened up in a residential road in Greater Manchester.

The hole, measuring about a metre (3ft) in diameter and 2m (6ft) deep, appeared in Surrey Avenue, Shaw, on Monday evening.

A woman who lives nearby said the road "started to dip before it quickly turned into a hole".

A United Utilities spokeswoman said the hole was caused by a broken sewer and repairs had started.

She said the sewer was still functioning properly, adding the company was "sorry for the inconvenience".

The area has been cordoned off and the road has been closed to all traffic.
