Bury shooting: Boxer Cole Kershaw dies in 'targeted attack'
- Published
A teenage boxer has died after being shot in a targeted attack in Greater Manchester that police believe was a case of mistaken identity.
Officers were called to reports of several shots fired in Bury at about 21:35 BST on Wednesday.
A spokesman said Cole Kershaw, 18, was found on Chesham Road with a single gunshot to the chest.
He was taken to hospital where he died a short time later. A murder investigation is under way.
Ch Supt Stuart Ellison said Mr Kershaw and four other men in a Ford Mondeo were caught up in an "altercation" with a group of men in a silver BMW "driving in tandem" in Bury town centre.
Shots were fired from the BMW when Mr Kershaw and another man stepped out of the Mondeo and he was fatally struck in the chest.
He said: "It's not clear at this stage, but it's unlikely Cole Kershaw was the intended target.
"It is quite clear it was a targeted attack on the vehicle and there doesn't seem to be a threat to the wider community."
In a tribute on Facebook, BrickCity Boxing Gym in Bury posted: "Last night we lost one of our own, we are truly lost for words and we cannot comprehend why or how it has happened.
"You weren't just King Cole Kershaw you were part of the BrickCity family, always in with a cheeky smile and always gave 1000% effort and you were a true inspiration to watch.
"Sending all our love to your family at this awful time. RIP King Cole Kershaw you will be missed so, so much."
