A 16-year-old boy found with stab wounds in the street has died, prompting a murder inquiry.
Kennie Carter was found badly injured in Thirlmere Avenue, Stretford, shortly before 19:00 GMT on Saturday, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.
He was taken to hospital but died shortly afterwards.
A police spokesman said five boys aged 15-17 were being held on suspicion of murder following arrests in Stretford, Old Trafford and Hulme.
One of the teenagers, aged 17, being held on suspicion of murder handed himself in at a police station later in the day.
The father of the victim told BBC North West Tonight "all the family are devastated" before reaching into his pocket to show money he said he was going to give to his son to buy something with before the tragedy happened.
Supt Caroline Hemingway of GMP added the family were "grieving the loss of a much-loved young soul".
She said they were being supported by officers.
Supt Hemingway said: "A team of detectives have been working through the night and into today to follow-up a number of different lines of inquiry and to piece together the circumstances leading to this callous attack."
She added: "Again, we see the utterly devastating consequences of knife crime. It destroys lives, families, and communities.
"It's so heartbreaking to see such a young life lost and such young people suspected of being capable of a horrendous act of violence."
According to residents, Thirlmere Avenue was usually a "quiet" street.
One resident, Sean Donoghue, said he was "pretty surprised" as it was "generally peaceful".
Greater Manchester Police said crime scenes have been set up in Stretford, Old Trafford and Hulme and extra officers are patrolling the areas.
