Plans for a futuristic new library have been unveiled by Manchester Metropolitan University.

The proposed development would replace the current library at All Saints on Oxford Road and would open in 2028, if given planning permission.

In addition to providing a space for students, the building would be home for the Manchester Poetry Library.

The library will also house a new gallery and event space for both public and university use.

Prof Karen Moore, chief operating officer at the university, said the new library would "reimagine what a university library can offer".

Architects Hawkins\Brown and Schmidt Hammer Lassen have been commissioned to design the structure.

Elif Tinaztepe, principal partner at Schmidt Hammer Lassen, said: "We wanted the building to communicate a generosity of spirit.

"Spaces of different character and identity flow naturally into one another, inviting the students to explore and curate their own experience on each visit."
