A woman has died in a "truly horrific attack" which led to her young children finding her with a stab wound to her chest, police have said.
Perseverance Ncube, 35, was discovered by the two youngsters in a house on Dukesgate Grove in Little Hulton, Salford, at about 02:40 GMT.
Greater Manchester Police said she was rushed to hospital where she later died.
A 45-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Paying tribute, her family said she "was a loving and devoted mother who lived for her children, family, and friends".
"Percy had just celebrated her 35th birthday in October, and her passing has left us with an immeasurable sense of loss."
They added that she was "an active member of her church and had created a beautiful community for herself and her children".
Det Ch Insp Gina Brennand said officers believed it was a "targeted attack" but recognised the incident would cause "worry in our communities".
As a result, extra neighbourhood officers would be patrolling the area, she said.
Appealing for information, she said it was "a truly horrific attack on a mother, witnessed by her two young children and we really need the public to come forward and give information to us to find answers for them".
"We are in the early stages of our investigation, and an experienced team of detectives continue to work extremely hard to understand a comprehensive timeline of events that will help us piece together what has happened," she added.
