A fly-tipper who ran an illegal waste disposal service on Facebook has been fined and ordered to carry out unpaid community work.

Colin O'Grady dumped waste across north Manchester between 2020 and 2021.

He claimed to operate a legitimate business and took payment for his services, which he advertised via his OG Rubbish Removals Facebook page.

The 51-year-old of Paxton Place, Beswick, was sentenced at Manchester Magistrates' Court on Friday.

O'Grady pleaded guilty to five offences under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and was handed a 12 month community order, which required him to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £95 and court costs of £800.

His sentence followed an investigation by Manchester City Council which found O'Grady had dumped waste at locations in Gorton, Harpurhey, Moston and Openshaw.

The council said that when waste operatives were alerted to the rubbish, they meticulously analysed it and managed to trace the households from which it had came.

When contacted, the residents informed the council that they had paid O'Grady to dispose of the waste.

The council's deputy leader Luthfur Rahman said: "Fly-tipping is a deeply selfish act and causes nothing but detriment to our communities.

"People do not deserve to have waste and filth strewn across their roads, simply because one individual decided they could make a quick profit.

"As we have seen in this case, this mindset did not pay off and the defendant will suffer the consequences."
