Northern said their services would finish at about 16:00 on Sunday

The Northern rail operator is advising people not to travel on routes in north-west England on Christmas Eve due to fewer staff.

Services will finish earlier than usual at about 16:00 GMT, with no services on some routes.

Northern regional director Craig Harrop apologised for any inconvenience.

He said passengers "should expect disruption" and ticket restrictions had been lifted so customers could use Christmas Eve tickets on Saturday.

Commuters are advised to check timetables before travelling.

They are advised not to travel on the following routes:

  • Morecambe/Heysham - Lancaster

  • Blackpool South - Colne

  • Wigan - Stalybridge

  • Clitheroe - Manchester Victoria

  • Manchester Victoria - Chester

  • Manchester Piccadilly - Chester (via Altrincham)

  • Manchester Piccadilly - Crewe
