A man has been arrested on suspicion of kidnap after a car was stolen with an 89-year-old passenger inside.

The driver had left the engine running so it remained warm while her mother waited inside near Ashton Market in Ashton-under-Lyne on Saturday.

A man got into the car and drove away with the elderly woman still in the passenger seat, Greater Manchester Police said.

The vehicle was stopped following a police chase, the force added.

A 50-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of kidnap, theft of a motor vehicle and dangerous driving.

He remains in police custody for questioning.

Ch Insp Matt Jackson said it must have been "really terrifying" for the woman, adding: "I am pleased to hear she was safely reunited with her daughter."
