A boy is in a critical condition after he was stabbed while "answering a knock at the door", police have said.

Greater Manchester Police said the 14-year-old was attacked on the doorstep of a house on Stovell Avenue, Longsight at about 20:00 GMT on Monday.

The force said a 15-year-old boy and a woman, aged 41, had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Appealing for witnesses, Det Ch Insp Gareth Davies said it was believed the "sickening" attack was "targeted".

He said the investigation into what happened was "progressing at a pace" and inquiries to "piece together the full circumstances of what has occurred" were continuing.

He added that officers believed there was "no risk to the wider public".
