Competition-winning Cheadle pupils unveil £25k eco-garden

Pupils will be able to grow their own vegetables

Pupils from neighbouring schools have unveiled a new £25,000 eco-garden funded by Manchester Airport.

Cheadle Catholic Infant and Junior Schools in Stockport won first prize in a competition to mark the 25th anniversary of the airport's Community Trust Fund.

Their winning eco-garden design included allotments, a forest school and outdoor classrooms.

Cheadle MP Mary Robinson joined pupils for the eco-garden's official opening.

Across southern Greater Manchester and northern Cheshire, 22 primary schools entered the competition in December 2022.

The £25,000 top prize was made available to fund a project that would promote environmental awareness among pupils whilst also creating a legacy for future generations.

The schools' winning design incorporated a sustainable community allotment, growing produce that will be used in cooking classes, a forest school designed to attract native plants and wildlife, and an open-air classroom complete with a weather station that will be used in science and geography sessions.
