Driver arrested after woman killed on East Lancashire Road

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a woman was knocked down and killed.

The woman, who was in her 30s, died from her injuries after she was struck on the East Lancashire Road in Lowton, near Wigan.

Greater Manchester Police said a 31-year-old man was arrested at the scene after the incident at about 00:50 GMT.

The force has urged anyone who may have seen the incident to come forward.

A section of the A580 is shut from its junction with Newton Road in Golborne, with diversions in place.

Det Sgt Matt Waggett said the vehicle involved in the crash was a Silver Vauxhall Insignia.

He said: "Our thoughts are with the family of this young woman who are dealing with their loss this morning.

"Investigation work will continue through the morning and I thank everyone affected by this tragic incident for their patience and understanding while the facts are established."
