Fifty car parking spaces would be axed to make way for larger, paid-for bays

Plans to introduce paid parking at Greater Manchester's Trafford Centre to "meet the expectations" of Selfridges customers have been lodged.

The proposal would see 250 spaces by the department store's branch at the centre reduced to 200, making room for larger vehicles and family cars.

It is part of Trafford Centre Limited's plan to attract "premium shoppers" and support its "high quality" stores.

There are more than 11,500 free spaces at the centre overall.

The application to Trafford Council would see the changes made in the Upper Peel car outside Selfridges.

It is one of only four of the department store's UK locations, and is described in the plans as one of the only branches to occupy a "out-of-town regional shopping centre".

The new area would be separated from the rest of the existing car park by Automatic Number Plate Recognition barriers.
