A man has been taken to hospital after falling down the ventilation shaft of a tunnel.

Merseyside Police confirmed the man fell while working on the structure on Waterloo Road, Liverpool at about 09:00 BST on Wednesday.

The Wallasey tunnel was closed in both directions while a team from Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service worked to rescue "a person from depth".

No information has been released about injuries the worker may have suffered.

Emergency services have now left the scene and the tunnel has reopened, a Merseytravel spokesman confirmed.

North West Ambulance Service has been approached for comment.
