A car has crashed through the window of a jewellers shop, coming to a stop just feet away from staff.

The Skoda Karoq ploughed into Midas Jewellers on King Street in Knutsford, Cheshire, at about 09:00 GMT.

Staff member Jeremy Goodwin said he and a colleague had been putting out window displays when it happened.

Cheshire Police said the driver, a 75-year-old local woman, was not injured in the crash.

A force spokesperson added no arrests had been made and inquiries were ongoing.

Mr Goodwin said it was a "shock" when it happened just as they were getting ready to open.

'Absolutely wrecked'

He continued: "I would say the car was about three or four feet away from us.

"There was a counter between us and the car but the car was pushing the counter towards us.

"Luckily myself and my colleague are okay but the shop is absolutely wrecked.

"I would say about 50% of the display cabinets are wrecked and half the front of the shop has been ripped out."

Passer-by Robert Stott said he heard a bang and what sounded like smashing glass.

He added: "I couldn't believe it. I heard this bang and thought that's a bit bizarre.

"My friend was working nearby and said there's a car gone through a shop window.

"It was a brand new 73 plate Skoda. There was nothing left of the shop front."

Knutsford Town Council urged people to avoid King Street immediately afterwards.

Police have asked anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.
