Police say the boy's death was not suspicious

A teenager has died after a canoe accident, police have said.

Emergency services were called to Raikes Lane in Bolton at about 20:00 BST on Tuesday after reports of a person in difficulty in the water.

Firefighters found four teenage boys at the scene, a police spokeswoman confirmed.

She added: "Sadly, a 17-year-old passed away despite the best attempts of emergency services."

The spokeswoman said enquiries continue but detectives from Bolton were confident there had been no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident at the River Croal.

Det Insp Stuart Woodhead said: "This is an extremely upsetting and distressing incident for those involved due to the tragic circumstances and we are continuing to support their loved ones at this time."
