Saints bid farewell to Knowsley Road stadium

Saints have called Knowsley Road home for 120 years

Thousands packed St Helens' Knowsley Road stadium to watch the Saints play their last league game at the ground.

Fans were at the GPW Recruitment Stadium for the game against the Castleford Tigers in the final fixture of the regular Super League season.

St Helens have called The GPW Recruitment Stadium home since 1890.

They will now use Widnes's Stobart Stadium for a year before moving into their new 18,000-capacity stadium near St Helens town centre.

Saints chairman Eamonn McManus has previously said of the move: "It's a necessity, we cannot stay at Knowsley Road. It's the only way to finance the new stadium and more importantly we can't keep it open for another year.

"In terms of basic safety requirements and basic investment in facilities the cost of doing that is much more prohibitive than going to Widnes. In addition to that it's a part of the financing structure for the new stadium that Knowsley Road is sold.

"It's no sacrifice, if any. Widnes is two miles away and the Stobart Stadium is atmospheric and it's comfortable. We can make it a fortress for a year."

Saints beat the Tigers 40-30 on Saturday, clinching second place in the Engage Super League.

That means there will be at least one more home game - a play-off match against Warrington next week.
