Sir Paul promised "intimate" gigs

Sir Paul McCartney is set to play two Christmas "homecoming" concerts in Liverpool and London.

The former Beatle has announced he is taking his band to the Hammersmith Apollo and Liverpool Academy for gigs with an "intimate vibe".

"Christmas is the perfect excuse for everyone to let their hair down and rock out," he said.

The concert in Liverpool on 20 December will be his first appearance in the city since 2008.

His first UK gig will be on Saturday 18 December at the Hammersmith Apollo - a venue he first played with The Beatles in December 1964.

He said: "I always love playing to a home audience and for me it's the perfect way to end the year.

"We've had great fun with the stadium shows this year and we're looking forward to the more intimate vibe of these ones.

"Christmas is the perfect excuse for everyone to let their hair down and rock out. We are looking forward to celebrating with the good people of London and Liverpool."

Sir Paul appeared at Liverpool Football Club's Anfield stadium as part of the city's year as European Capital of Culture.

Tickets, which go on sale at 1000 GMT on Wednesday, are limited to four per person.
