Archbishop Kelly will be out of action for two months

The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Liverpool, the Right Reverend Patrick Kelly, is to miss Easter services this year due to a hip operation.

Archbishop Kelly is due to enter hospital on 14 March and will be recuperating for at least two months, said an archdiocese spokesman.

It means he will not be celebrating any Holy Week services at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ The King.

Retired auxiliary Bishop Vincent Malone will take his place.

The Morecambe-born archbishop celebrates 49 years as a priest on 16 February.

He has been Archbishop of Liverpool since 1996, previously he had been bishop of neighbouring Salford Diocese for 12 years.

The Archdiocese of Liverpool covers Merseyside, South West Lancashire, part of Greater Manchester and The Isle of Man.
