Tulip's Birkenhead Tranfoods to close

More than 200 jobs will be lost at a food processing factory in Wirral when the plant's owner transfers production to other sites.

Cooked meats firm Tulip Ltd is to close Birkenhead-based Tranfoods, which it acquired in 2011, with the loss of 214 jobs.

Production will move to either King's Lynn or Bodmin.

Peter Judge, Tulip Ltd chief operating officer, said: "The site is at the end of its economic life."

The company is to begin a 90-day consultation period with staff.

Mr Judge said: "The Tranfoods site is quite an old site in terms of the operation, by modern manufacturing standards.

"We have capacity within other parts of the Tulip operation where we can do this manufacturing volume without having to invest significant capital in a bid to bring the volume on stream.

"We are working with local politicians and the staff to see if there is an alternative local production as part of our 90-day consultation."
