Aintree to get bronze bust of Red Rum trainer Ginger McCain

Grand National winning trainer Ginger McCain is to be commemorated with a bronze bust at Aintree.

The artwork, commissioned by the racecourse, will be placed on the mound overlooking the parade ring.

It will celebrate the trainer of three-times Grand National winner Red Rum and 2004 hero Amberleigh House. McCain died from cancer in September aged 80.

His son Donald said Aintree was a place his father had "held dear to his heart".

The bust will be produced by Nigel Boonham, whose previous work has included Diana, Princess of Wales, and sporting personalities John McEnroe and Lord Coe.

Mr Boonham said he was "immediately struck by what a marvellous, expressive face Ginger had".

Aintree is also home to a life-size bronze statue of Red Rum, the horse McCain guided to three victories and two second places in a five-year period during the 1970s.
