A Merseyrail guard has appeared in court charged with causing the death of a teenage girl at a Liverpool station.

Georgia Varley, 16, of Wallasey, Wirral, died when she fell between the carriage and the platform last October.

The solicitor for Christopher McGee, 44, from Wallasey, told Liverpool magistrates he would be contesting the charge of manslaughter through gross negligence.

He was bailed to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on 8 March.

The teenager was running to catch a train home at James Street station in Liverpool when the accident happened on 22 October.

About 40 passengers were on the platform at the time of Georgia's death which involved the 23:01 Merseyrail service to West Kirby.

Appearing at Liverpool Magistrates' Court, Mr McGee spoke only to confirm his name, address in Wallasey and date of birth.

He did not enter a plea but his solicitor said he would be "contesting the case fully".

He added that, as it was the first public hearing into the case, Mr McGee wanted to "sincerely express his condolences to Georgia's parents, family and friends for the loss of their daughter and friend".
