The 4th Battalion The Parachute Regiment has received the Freedom of the city of Liverpool.

The freedom scroll was presented in a ceremony at St Nicholas, Liverpool's Parish Church, before a parade by soldiers through the city.

The award marks a link with Liverpool dating from the unit's World War II predecessor the 13th (Lancashire).

Lt Col John Boyd, Commanding Officer of 4 Para, said the battalion was "hugely proud" of the honour.

He said: "It means a lot to us to receive such recognition from a city so closely linked to our wartime heritage of the 13th (Lancashire) Battalion the Parachute Regiment.

"I would like to thank the public for their continued support of my soldiers and I hope to see the already strong links between 4 Para and the City of Liverpool grow in the years to come."

The parade was followed by a civic reception at Liverpool Town Hall.
