Lorry crash spills baked beans on M6

Motorists faced severe delays on the M6 after a lorry crashed and shed its load of baked beans onto the carriageway.

The lorry hit the central reservation on the southbound carriageway of the motorway between junctions 22 and 2,3 near Newton-le-Willows in Merseyside.

The crash happened just before 11:00 BST, blocking two lanes of the motorway in both directions.

The motorway was closed for 15 minutes as the vehicle was moved, the Highways Agency said.

One lane remained closed in each direction at 17:00 BST on Wednesday, and further lane closures were expected to take place overnight while repairs to the barrier are carried out.
