A major clean-up has started in Wirral after shops in New Brighton's shopping complex were flooded following strong winds and the high tide.

A man who was stranded on the sea wall after being cut off by fast-flowing tidal water was rescued by firefighters late on Thursday night.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said he was unharmed.

In Knowsley, a man in his 50s remains in a serious condition in hospital after a 60ft (18m) tree fell in high winds.

He was injured when the tree landed on two cars and a house in Old Meadow shortly after 10:30 GMT.

Mersey Ferries have said there will be no ferry service on Friday morning and a bus replacement will be in operation from Seacombe to Hamilton Square.

Many roads across Merseyside also remain closed due to flooding.
