Nearly 4,000 people have signed a petition calling for speed bumps to be placed on a road where a six-year-old boy was killed.

Bobby Colleran, of Huyton, died after he was hit by a van on Leyfield Road, West Derby, last Friday afternoon.

Following his death, an e-petition was launched calling for traffic calming measures in the road.

MP Stephen Twigg has met families in the area to discuss adding speed bumps and more crossings.

Mr Twigg said: "The whole community here in West Derby has been shocked by this tragedy, but I think this campaign shows that something positive can come out of it.

"It's long overdue for the area. I live round the corner myself and I know the road well. It does get incredibly busy and I've had a lot of concerns raised with me about safety around local schools.

"There are a number of measures that need to be undertaken now."

Mr Twigg said he had raised the matter with Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson, and is calling on the city council to assess what can be done to make the road safer.
