A former Liverpool reserve player has admitted helping one of the killers of Merseyside police officer Neil Doyle.

Stephen Vaughan, 31, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice by giving Timmy Donovan, 30, his Mercedes in which he fled to Germany.

PC Doyle was killed while off duty on a Christmas night out in Liverpool city centre in December 2014.

Vaughan, of Tower Way, Woolton, will be sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court next month.

Judge Steven Everett adjourned sentencing until 31 March for reports to be obtained.

Donovan and Andrew Taylor, 29, both of Huyton, were jailed for PC Doyle's manslaughter in September 2015.

Vaughan started his football career at Liverpool FC as a reserve and went on to play for Chester City. He is now a boxing promoter.
