A man has died after being hit by a lorry on the M53, police said.
Officers were called to Junction 4 at Clatterbridge in Wirral at 10:50 BST after the man was struck close to the sliproad on the motorway's northbound carriageway, Merseyside Police said.
The motorway was closed in both directions for around seven hours between Junctions 4 and 5 to allow police to investigate.
Highways England said both carriageways had reopened by around 19:15.
An investigation has begun to establish the man's identity, a police spokesman added.
The M53 closure caused severe disruption to Stagecoach routes in Chester, Liverpool and Ellesmere Port.
