A large sinkhole has opened up in part of Liverpool after a water main burst.

The 15ft by 20ft (4.5m by 6m) crater appeared at about 22:30 BST on Friday as some residents reported losing their water supply.

Fire crews and police were called to the scene at the junction of Prescot Road and Green Lane, Old Swan, to aid efforts to stop flooding.

United Utilities said engineers had diverted supplies but repairs would take at least two weeks.

Water supplies to some homes in the area were cut off for some time, it said, but had since been reconnected.
